This week’s episode is: Beginning of the Worst.

Oh boy. The title of this episode is quite descriptive and accurate. The Hammond relative that takes Anne to the orphanage seems quite glad to have the duty discharged. Then Anne isn’t allowed to keep her belongings – not with her anyway. This only confirms to Anne everything bad she ever heard about orphanages. The girls there don’t help, though in all fairness we have never seen Anne so uncommunicative – until she explodes. We’ve seen bits of Anne’s temper before, but nothing like this. No wonder Anne puts so much emphasis on her name – because at first she refuses to say anything including her name one of the girls starts calling her Nanashi – no name. Poor Anne. And the lady teacher at least tries to be nice, but Anne does NOT want to be there. She sneaks into the headmistress’ office for the keys to where the orphan’s belongings are and she gets out the pictures of Prince Edward Island she was given. One of the girls sees this and a bunch of girls grab Anne’s things to look at them and make fun of them in some sort of shed in the back. Unfortunately, there is an accident and a fire starts there. No one is hurt thankfully, but at the very least Anne’s book by Browning is ruined and Anne is blamed for all of this. Not an unreasonable assumption given her belongings are in what’s left of the shed, but still how is Anne going to get through this? And how are the other girls going to react? On a side note, the bookish, blond girl seems to be a leader among the girls – a nice change from the stereotype.
